My partner is getting a job abroad, now what?

Being an accompanying spouse has a romantic tune to it, but reality can be different. While your partner already has a job, you might find yourself at a crossroad with numerous possibilities. How to navigate that?

There you are, suitcase packed, furniture shipped and in two hours you’re taking the plane with your life partner to a different country or even continent. Different culture, maybe a different language but most of all a different experience awaits you.

I’ve been there, moved to Kenya in 2017 and are now packing to go “back” to the Netherlands. First thing that kept me awake when we arrived in this beautiful country was how our kids would adapt. Well, let me tell you, they did a lot better than I.

My next question was what career to pursue? Back to you, will you try out something new or keep doing what you always did and move from there? Doing the same in a different country is still doing something differently. Trying out something completely new is an even bigger challenge.

Both options require some reflection or a maybe even a reset. You have the opportunity to unplug yourself and dive into your creative brain. Is this the chance to pursue my dream job / business? If the answer is yes, then you have an exciting time ahead of you.

Finding a professional coach might be your fits sensible first step to take. She or he will help you to find your previously unexplored passions or ideas about life and work. What are your skills? How to use them wisely? What do you need to learn? What is the way forward? Those are all questions relevant to your new life.

So don’t hesitate and contact a qualified coach. But not before you had a good look at your new neighbourhood and all these interesting new people that live around you. Enjoy the journey!
