Feeling exhausted at the end of a workweek? You’re not alone, but what to do…

Thank God It’s Friday in New York

was the first time I ate potato wedges with some obscure sauce accompanied by a beer. We’re talking mid 90’s of the last century. Back in those days, it being Friday gave us a sigh of relief. One that I also recognised, working as a CPA for an international audit firm.

But let’s head back to the year 2021

. Nothing really changed did it? I still hear my friends and colleagues complaining about their workload. I still see them longing for the weekend, the holidays or other brakes from everyday life. Just to catch their breath so they can move on, back to work and/or taking care of the kids and other things on our to do list.

            More importantly however

           is why are we unable

to fence off that endless of depletion of energy? Is it work demands, children, social engagements, Covid or all of the above? My observation, none of the above. We just hold our breaths too long and forget to take short brakes and use those to recharge. Besides, don’t expect much of the weekends as those are packed with running errands anyways.

           So what then?

a good 120 minutes a week being surrounded by nature benefits your health. It has been shown to ward off feelings of exhaustion and boost your energy levels. That is why I prefer outdoor coaching with my clients. Not necessarily in a 10,000 acre forest but just in your park next door. Here in Leiden or wherever you are.

, why don’t you get out a bit more often, away from your desk at the office or your “work closet” at home. By the time the weekend is there, you will have all the energy in the world to do more fun things. And if you are interested in a chat

Being an accompanying spouse has a romantic tune to it, but reality can be different. While your partner already has a job, you might find yourself at a crossroad with numerous possibilities. How to navigate that?

There you are, suitcase packed, furniture shipped and in two hours you’re taking the plane with your life partner to a different country or even continent. Different culture, maybe a different language but most of all a different experience awaits you.

I’ve been there, moved to Kenya in 2017 and are now packing to go “back” to the Netherlands. First thing that kept me awake when we arrived in this beautiful country was how our kids would adapt. Well, let me tell you, they did a lot better than I.

My next question was what career to pursue? Back to you, will you try out something new or keep doing what you always did and move from there? Doing the same in a different country is still doing something differently. Trying out something completely new is an even bigger challenge.

Both options require some reflection or a maybe even a reset. You have the opportunity to unplug yourself and dive into your creative brain. Is this the chance to pursue my dream job / business? If the answer is yes, then you have an exciting time ahead of you.

Finding a professional coach might be your fits sensible first step to take. She or he will help you to find your previously unexplored passions or ideas about life and work. What are your skills? How to use them wisely? What do you need to learn? What is the way forward? Those are all questions relevant to your new life.

The value of a good dialogue

I have a confession to make, I can be a real prick. But there is an upside to it and I'll tell you why.

Hi. I need to share something personal, I can be a real prick, pardon my French, and I’ll tell you why. It usually happens at parties. The conversation topics are either a bit boring or are just scratching the surface of what needs to be said. At least according to my opinion.

So when I’m in a situation like this, my ego kicks in. I know better of course… and this is what’s happening. Listening to the conversation I am taking an opposite stand. Not necessarily because I belief in that stand, but more to lure someone into clarifying his or her position on the matter. After all, what is the fun of expressing yourself in terms of “I totally agree with that”? None, right?

My aim is to find out how strong someone’s beliefs are on the matter or how well thought over his or her stand. I want to learn. Sometimes my motives are not as noble and I just want to be a pain, but we’ll leave that for now. So in questioning the motives or principles we will have a vivid dialogue or discussion and sometimes even an argument. Part from the last option, in the end we go home enriched by the conversation and we both learned something.

Not everyone likes me for that though, but here’s the catch. As a coach I do more or less the same. I challenge your thoughts, habits, beliefs, values and what more. My aim as a coach is however only noble. I want you to learn about yourself so you can address the challenges in your life in a better way. Next time without the help of a coach, whether it will be me or someone else qualified for the job.

So do engage in a dialogue every now and then with people who do not agree with you or your principles. If you are really open to listen to what they say, you might actually learn something new. Not only about the other and his or her beliefs, no, most of all about yourself. Because you reflected on your thoughts and were able to express them in a respectful way. Have a great dialogue, have a great learning!

Sishida Yangu (It's not my Problem)

Most of us have a tendency to solve someone else's problems. Saying "no" a bit more often might help everyone involved.

Living in Kenya is wonderful. It’s a beautiful country full of nice and friendly people. And, as in many countries, it is appreciated if you try to speak the language. I do a bit and one phrase I needed to learn early in my Kiswahili career is “shishida yangu”, it’s not my problem. A word I don’t need to use often, but often enough to enjoy having learned it.

Sometimes, when something goes wrong, the person in question looks at me in the hope I will solve it for him. It might be the plumber, a car mechanic or someone who wants to buy my car for half the requested price. My first tendency is to figure out what to do to make the problem go away, I feel it’s my responsibility. But is that the best strategy?

It is my belief that accountability and responsibility are two wonderful concepts. So if you mess up things or just don’t have the money to buy a car, is that really for me to solve? No it isn’t so I tell them. In coaching I do the same and my first question will be “how would you solve this situation?”

I see this problem-solver behaviour also in my clients. They want to be the rescuer. People forget that in doing so they’ll end up with everyone’s problems on their plate and don't leave the one in charge who owns the problem. But most importantly, they will loose sight of their own needs.

So please ask yourself occasionally the following question when someone approaches you with an issue: “Is it really up to me to resolve this or is that someone better equipped?” You will do the other but most of all yourself a great favour if you answer “no” just a bit more.

Why cross-cultural coaching might be a good idea?

Different cultures can learn so much from each other and coaching people from different backgrounds enriches both client and coach.

I like my Kenyan friends, acquaintances, fellow coaches and clients a lot. They are very polite; inquire about your family first before doing business and work hard on building up a relationship. This is a bit in contrast to my Dutch fellow citizens. The Dutch speak up their minds, get straight to business and have lunch with clients at the local café with a cheese sandwich and a coffee.

So you can imagine that I’ve learned a lot when I came to Kenya and started coaching Kenyan entrepreneurs, radio-makers and social enterprises. Although I thought coaching was this universal language, untouched by local cultures, I was wrong. For me as a very result oriented person, the outcome of a coaching session was important. But I learned that taking time to build up the relationship is just as important, really getting to know this person besides me.

The downside of all this politeness is that my Kenyan colleagues will hardly confront me with my flaws, should I have any of course. My way of interacting with people, especially colleagues and clients, is being straightforward and holding a mirror of what I see. It is then up to them to give it a thought and act on it, or not. We both learn from this interaction.

So how will this benefit my Kenyan coachee, this openness of this peach guy from the cold north? Well, first of all I am a safe place, away from the pressures of extended families and society. I don’t raise my eyebrow when they say they are fed up with paying bills for the whole family or they don’t want to pursue the career of being a lawyer. I listen and reflect what I see and feel, ask them what they really want. I don’t judge them (which my Kenyan colleagues won’t as well), but I also challenge them a bit more… just because I am Dutch.

Try Out New Stuff

In life there are no shortcuts to joy. Anything that is worth pursuing is going to require us to suffer a little bit. – Chris Burkard TEDGlobal June 2015

Did ever try something new? Something that makes you uncomfortable at first but then, when time progresses, you found yourself in a happy place? Where you discovered that you were able to do more, create more than you thought you could? Probably you did, like me when I started coaching in Kenya. You surpassed the boundaries and limitations of your own mind and moved on to a better space.

This pandemic gives us time to reflect. But also time to work on something new, something that you’ve never done before. To redesign your life based on new parameters, with or without a coach. Maybe working from home gives you the flexibility you need, apart of course for the ones, like me, who are stuck at home schooling your kids... But nonetheless, get out on your balcony, go to a park or a forest nearby and reflect.

A helpful strategy for this is design thinking where, to cut a long story short, you’ll

           get curious

            , you

           talk to people

            and then

           try stuff

. So why don’t you use this strategy to find that one thing you always wanted to do and make time for it? Ricardo Semler (2016) calls this his “terminal day”. That day of the week where he does stuff that he would if he new he had only six months to live. So find the mental space and try different stuff and maybe, in a few years time, you’ll look back on 2021 with a smile on your face.

The people around me here in Kenya experience Christmas differently then we do but are grateful nonetheless. How gratefull are you?

Let’s reflect on gratitude for a moment. Yesterday we asked our driver what he had for Christmas diner. “Ugali” he replied, the maize dish Kenyans eat every day. He lives a sober life so his kids can go to college. Hearing his reply, I looked at our groceries for this Christmas and realised how far our worlds are apart.

For us Christmas is a moment to have some quality time with our family, share an abundant meal and tell stories about our ordeals and moments of glory. For him and with him many others, it is a day as any other part from maybe celebrating the birth of Christ together in church.

So I am taking this time at the diner table for being grateful for everything we have; food on the table, a roof over our heads and friends and family to share our lives with. And we leave the sadness behind us because we couldn’t buy all the gifts we wanted to or we missed out on the ski trip in the alps this year because of the pandemic.

I am a fortunate man who is surrounded by friends, colleagues and clients who are grateful for what they have achieved in life. They are aware that they have been able to grasp the opportunities life has given them. They are also aware that not everyone is in the position to do so. I am grateful to live my life among such wonderful people.

Coaching as my Life's Lessons

Coaching other people does not only help them to move forward, it also helps me as a coach to reflect, stand still and learn.

Coaching is all about the client’s big WHY, what is he or she looking for. But coaching is also about something else, my own big WHY. I’m in this coaching business to learn from others and let others learn from themselves. That is a wonderful journey for the both of us but let me focus on mine for a change.

I’m in a different country with different ideas, moral codes and ethics, in short: ‘values’. Talking to people, whether in a coaching relationship or just having a coffee, is a wonderful way of learning about these different values. But in a coaching relationship it’s more intense. Clients open up to us coaches like daffodils to the sun, showing great trust in us as coaches. And in this particular sharing is my learning.

They tell me about their struggles of having an extended family. They tell me about the troubles of setting up a company, finding qualified staff and getting the funds to make it grow. They tell me about the endless regulations that limit the speed of doing business and of course they tell me about the ever-present fight against corruption.

But most of all they teach me how to survive and thrive in these situations. Because all of these entrepreneurs have a remarkable innate resilience and trust that it will all end well? And it is just that what we in The Netherlands have forgotten about: The believe that sometimes we don’t have to do anything to make it right. Call it inner peace, call it a divine intervention, call it whatever you want but to me that is the place where I earn the most.
